Tough Guy Poses - NOT

Description

Many people - I too, used to - intend to convey toughness by drawing their character with the hands in their pockets or their arms crossed. Which doesn't surprise me because all the big ones (Disney, Pixar, anime studios, mangaka,..) are giving the bad example and so do stupid wannabe tough guys IRL.

These poses do NOT say "tough", but the contrary.

Hands in pockets:
Hiding, awkward, uncomfortable with the situation, has a secret.

Arms crossed:
Defensive, blocking, rejecting. "Stay away from me".

When during a conversation someone crosses their arms, this usually means they disagree with you, or they want to get out of there.
It can also convey impatience as in "I don't feel right here anymore, I wanna get out of this situation, I'm tired waiting".

When someone tells you to the face that you're a motherfucker with a pig for a mother and a monkey for a dad, but have their hands in their pockets, they know they've got a punch coming and don't REALLY want to be pissing you off.

Model: A former friend of mine who goes through life in these poses. Yes, a loser.

As soon as you take one hand out of the pocket and point though, then you've got Jotaro. That pose is famous for its dominating effect. One hand on the offensive and the other reserved to show that he has everything under control and hardly cares enough about any danger.

A classic and tried pose.
